Coral Discoverer

One of our most popular small ships, the incredibly stylish 72-passenger Coral Discoverer offers outstanding Kimberley cruising over ten nights between Darwin and Broome.

About Coral Discoverer

The state-of-the-art Coral Discoverer is the grand vision of Coral Expeditions, the pioneers in Kimberley cruises. Originally launched in 2005, Coral Discoverer remains one of the most technologically-advanced expedition ships operating in the Kimberley, and with regular refurbishments and modernisations has enhanced her reputation as one of the best choices for an unforgettable Kimberley cruise.

At 63 metres in length and accommodating just 72 travellers, Coral Discoverer offers all the flexibility and accessibility of much smaller ships, along with amenities and comforts you would expect to find on larger vessels. One of her great advantages is her flexible range of excursion craft, from a fleet of inflatable zodiacs, through to the unique Xplorer excursion tender which allows access to even the most hard-to-reach locations on the coast. Her expedition teams are also some of the ‘best in the business’; engaging, approachable and knowledgeable, these experts in their fields will ensure you get to truly know the Kimberley, it’s history, geology, wildlife and legends.

Right throughout  your expedition you will savour outstanding dining experiences. Coral Discoverer’s panoramic Dining Room offers open-seat dining without the need to reserve a table, allowing you to dine with old or new friends on each occasion. Start the day with your choice of a continental breakfast, complete with cereals, fresh fruits and yoghurts or enjoy a fully-cooked breakfast buffet complemented by daily made-to-order specialties.

The lunch buffet showcases a variety of hot and cold dishes; from salads and cold cuts to lighter soups and fresh local seafoods and tropical fruits.

Reflect on each exciting day of discovery and savour the table service and hospitality of the Dining Room staff over a delicious three-course dinner from the table d’hôte menu. There is always a choice of main course options. Vegetarian and other dietary requirements can be catered for. Lunches and dinners are accompanied by a carefully curated wine list featuring artisanal Australian and New Zealand wines. Table wines and beer during meal service are included.

Australian flagged, and staffed entirely by an Australian and New Zealand crew of 20, your cruise aboard Coral Discoverer will remain in your memory for a lifetime.

Coral Discoverer Kimberley Cruise F.A.Q.

Looking for answers about your Coral Discoverer Kimberley cruise? Here’s the answers to the most frequently asked questions we receive.

While you don’t need to be super fit, you will gain the most enjoyment from the expedition if you can walk a few hundred metres without difficulty and unassisted. Most hikes ashore are leisurely strolls along beaches, however, there are some more strenuous walks on offer, where there may be uneven terrain and loose stones. An alternative excursion will always be offered in place of higher impact walks. During the cruise, there may be a couple of swimming opportunities in freshwater pools.

No, not at all! In fact, with Coral Expeditions’ unique range of excursion tenders, travellers are able to access locations along the Kimberley coast normally only accessible to those travelling on the smallest ships.

Coral Discoverer is equipped with a flexible range of excursion tenders, allowing access to the most hard-to-reach corners of the Kimberley coast. An Xplorer excursion tender is used for longer explorations along the tidal rivers, and this feature individual seating for up to 72 travellers, a roof for protection from the sun and an onboard toilet. For shorter, more adventurous excursions, such as Horizontal Falls, a fleet of inflatable Zodiacs are on hand. Boarding of excursion tenders is made easy from Coral Discoverer’s hydraulic platform.

The Kimberley has a warm climate, meaning guests should pack light-weight clothing that can be layered. Throughout your expedition, wet landings (where you may need to step from a tender into ankle deep water) are common and pants which can be rolled up, shorts or a cotton skirt/dress are ideal. Lightweight long-sleeved shirt will offer good protection from the sun. Comfortable walking shoes and wet landing shoes such as reef walkers, Tevas or old sneakers are recommended. A wrap or cardigan is ideal for cooler evenings on deck.

Limited Laundry services are available aboard Coral Discoverer. Laundry bags may be found in your wardrobe. Charges incurred for laundry will be added to your onboard account.

Aboard Coral Discoverer you will begin each day with a choice of a lighter, fresh continental breakfast or an a la carte hot breakfast. Lunches showcase a selection of hot and cold dishes, from salads and cold cuts to soups, fresh local seafood and seasonal tropical fruits both individual platted and small sharing plates. Evenings are a convivial time to dine with new friends and reflect on an exciting day of discovery over dinner. Evening meals feature a three-course table d’Hote dinner menu with table service.

For most of your Kimberley cruise you will be out of mobile phone range, meaning you cannot connect to your telecommunications provider’s signal. Luckily, Coral Discoverer does have guest WiFi access, meaning services such as Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp are viable services to remain in contact with friends and family at home.

Coral Discoverer has recently received upgraded Starlink internet capability, allowing guests to access quality WiFi during their Kimberley cruise. Guests are provided with complimentary access to standard speed service, which is ideal for email, social image sharing, web browsing and messaging. Guests also have the opportunity to upgrade to a high-speed service, at additional cost onboard.

Fishing is not a focus on a Coral Discoverer Kimberley cruise. There might be one or two opportunities to try your luck with a hand reel during the cruise, however this is subject to time and operational constraints and any fish caught must be released and cannot be taken home.

Coral Discoverer has a no drone policy onboard given potential impacts to the ship’s electronic and navigation equipment, permit restrictions and remote area safety considerations.

When joining a Coral Discoverer Kimberley cruise you require travel insurance that provides protection against the need to cancel (as fees of up to 100% of the fare apply) and also coverage for remote area medical evacuation. At Kimberley Cruise Specialists we are able to offer a 20% discount on nib Travel Insurance (which offers both of these requirements, and much more) for travellers who book their Coral Discoverer cruise through us.
