With the ever-increasing popularity of Kimberley cruises, True North Adventure Cruises has announced that they’re adding a second ship to their fleet in 2023, with True North set to be joined by True North II on a range of Kimberley and Australian Coastal voyages.
The ‘new’ True North II does have a familiar look about her though, and expeditioners who cruised the Kimberley Coast back in the early 2000’s might recognise as the predecessor to the current True North, if that’s not too confusing! Originally launched in 1999, she operated as the 22-passenger True North until 2006, when the current, larger True North entered service.
Just 22 Travellers aboard True North II
Since 2006, the ship has been operated as a charter vessel, most recently up in Indonesia. But now, given incredible demand, she is returning to the True North Adventure Cruises fold as the True North II. Of course, before re-entering service as True North II ahead of the 2023 Kimberley cruising season, she will be sailed to Fremantle to undergo maintenance and a major refit. According to Craig Howson, founder of True North Adventure Cruises, the “boat is in first class condition. It has been extremely-well maintained and remembering that it was originally designed to conduct adventure-cruises along the Kimberley coast – it remains ideally suited to this task.”
True North II will accommodate just 22 travellers in three grades of accommodation. Like, True North, the entry level accommodation will be the three Ocean Class (bunk beds), six River Class cabins offer a queen size bed while the two top-of-the-range Explorer Class are larger, feature queen size beds and panoramic viewing windows. While on board, guests will be exceptionally looked after by a generally-Australian crew of up to 14.
There’s also roomy forward and rear decks to take in the views and fresh air, while on the inside a comfortable combined lounge / saloon adjoins a ‘boardroom’ style dining room, where travellers can expect to enjoy the very high standards of cuisine they have come to expect from True North Adventure Cruises.
When it’s time for excursions, True North II, like her sister-ship, is equipped with a helicopter (helicopter flights are at additional expense and can be booked as a package or individually) and five tenders, labelled ‘adventure boats’ by the company. This all means that there’s plenty of flexibility in the excursions that can be offered, from fishing (always a popular activity for those keen to land a barra!) through to wildlife watching and landings ashore to hike and view Aboriginal rock art.
The introduction of True North II does allow for more travellers to experience the True North Kimberley experience, and the pricing will also be more accessible, with an approximate 25% reduction on True North’s normal daily rates. The current True North will offer a superior level of onboard refinement, however life onboard True North II will also be very comfortable and stylish and more importantly, it will still be the same True North experience featuring exceptional access to wilderness, multiple daily activities and, refined onboard dining.
True North II’s sailing schedule commences in March 2023 and in many instances, it will complement the True North schedule. We are particularly excited about the new ten-night Kimberley Explorer itinerary between Broome and Wyndham (with transfer to Kununurra included), which we think will be very popular as it covers off all the highlights of the coast while being three nights shorter than the 13-night Kimberley Ultimate itinerary. Prices for the Kimberley Explorer programme start at $16,995 per person, twin share.
There’s a 4-night Kimberley Buccaneer programme commencing in 2023, which is ideal for travellers who maybe aren’t sure if small ship cruising is for them. You can get a taste for the True North experience from Broome into the southern Kimberley, with highlights including Horizontal Falls, Montgomery Reef, Aboriginal Art and more.
